Titans Women Win Over Irish

Friday night, the lady titans traveled to the Irish. On the first play of the game, Alana bishop went down with an ankle injury. Playing short, the ladies titan’s backs went on a run capping it off with Monica Hehli out running the Irish to score in the corner. After a few hard scrums Sherri had to leave the game do to injury.

Later in the half Alana was taped up and returning to the game. It was a hard fought game playing some of the Irish premier players. The ladies got a little taste of what next year will be all about. 5-0 at half the ladies regrouped and played some amazing defense. Kayla Ormond score half way through with a 5 yard run for the try. Continually battling for ball and playing strong defense  the game was capped off with Nicole Boerman scoring on a nice feed from Whitney Reid.

Outstanding play from Anita Larose, Chelsey Clifford, Jenith Ible and Kayla Ormond allowed the titan to win the game and finish the season undefeated at 12-0.

Huge Busy Weekend For Titans

Firstly, big thanks to the Casino workers this weekend who came through with the necessary time commitment to create much needed funds to operate our Club.  Special appreciation to General Managers Mel Meikle, Matt Burton and Norm McDougall and Treasurer Phil Heist for the paper work leading up to the event.  Special recognition to the late night money counters crew. ( 11 p.m. - 2:30 a.m. is quite a sacrifice.)

Secondly, thanks to the members who stepped up to the plate to work the four day Chuckwagon event from Thursday to Sunday this week.  Special appreciation to Rob Andrews and Rob Reger for working several shifts.

Special boo of unthankfulness to the four members who did not show up to fulfill their commitment at the Chucks and left the Club hanging short for Saturday and Sunday.  You know who you are.  If you sign up to do an event for the Club you must be grown up and responsible to do your duty.  The Club lost an easy $150.  We need a mature attitude from all members to maximize our security fundraising.

With the Rebels Hockey, Concerts and other events starting up soon including the Rebels' Black and White game on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 12:45, the Canada vs. Russia U20 Hockey Series on Friday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 and The Blue Man Show Tues., Sept. 18 we will need everyone to do their duty to start filling our bank account for next season.  Step up to the plate for your Club! (also earn credits for yourself)

Friday details:
Mens' 3rds -  won their third match in a row and have completed the regular season with a 6 - 6 record good enough for third place.  Playoffs next Sat., Aug. 25  vs. Hornets in Calgary.  Time TBA.  We need everyone at training to field a strong team to win!

Try scorers for Red Deer were:  Matt Kidd, Ciaran Ormond, Mike West, Andrew Herbert, Michaud Favre ( Man of the Match), and Lonnie Amundson.  Greg Hitchcock had four conversions.  The Thirds are really coming on and a big effort will get them past the Hornets who won only one more game this season to finish second.

Senior Women - playing without provincial rep. players at the Nationals in Newfoundland - Bernie Larose, Nicole Leontowicz and Jen Wickwire;   the ladies won their 12th straight and finished the regular season undefeated.  The scorers were - Monica Hehli in the first half giving the Titans a narrow 5 -0 lead.  Second half Nicole Boorman, Kayla Ormond scored tries to clinch the win in a tight defensive battle in Calgary.  Ladies host Banff on Sat. at Titans in the playoff quarter-finals.  Keep winning, Titans!

Sat. details -  Titans 12 - Edm. Leps/Tigers 19

Titans First Div. Men crashed to earth after their excellent performance last week and lost 19 - 12 to a much improved Edmonton Leps/Tigers in Ellerslie. Titans scored first after a big run by Sean Tindall set up Colin Viens who drove in from 10 m.  Wade Moore's conversion hit the upright;   5 - 0 Titans at six minutes.  Red Deer took their foot off the gas and the Leps took control with the Titans dropping the wet ball and missing tackles.  First Leps/ Tiger try was a burst by no.13 through the middle of the backs from about 25 m. out.  Second try at 27 minutes took advantage of weak tackling.  The third try for the Leps at 33 minutes resulted from a penalty at the ruck at the Titans' 40 m. line. The Leps kicked to the corner and executed the long lineout throw, something the Titans failed to do, again, and after several phases they overcame stubborn Titans' defense. Leps built up a 19 - 5 lead at the half.

Titans rallied somewhat in the second half going to the bench but could only manage a penalty try awarded to Kyle Kaus who was tackled while chasing a ball kicked in goal.  Lonnie Amundson converted with 10 minutes remaining.  Throughout much of the second half the team found themselved pinned deep and unable to execute any attack by the backs. The forwards held their own in the scrum and drove lineouts well. Most of the mistakes were tactical or just plain not catching or passing well. A last play attack of about 50 m. fell just short of the line when another wet ball was dropped.  The Titans did secure one bonus point for losing by 7 or less points but the Edmonton Clanmens' come from behind victory over the Calgary Rams 17 -10 gave the Edmonton team fourth place and home field advantage in Saturday's quarter-finals August 25.

They say you learn a lot more about rugby by losing and the Titans learned much on Saturday.  This week the team will need to re-focus and simply correct the errors.  Playing in wet conditions seemed very difficult for the players but the Leps had the same conditions to play in. Nevertheless, the excellent 9 - 5 record is proof that the team is capable of playing fine, winning rugby.

Go Titans Go!

U 18 Girls Win Provincial Championship

The Junior Women were impressive with their controlled annihilation of the north champion Lep/Tiger 25 - 0.  The young ladies took the opening kick off and worked through 8 phases before being stopped short of the line.  The Titans scrums and disciplined defense proved too tough and the Titans owned the ball all night long.

Captain and University of Lethbridge recruit, Bernie LaRose, scored two tries as did Monica Hehli of Rimbey.  The single try was scored by Rocky resident, Jovita Byzitter.  The Titans compiled a 6 - 1 record to capture the Provincial Title for the third time in four years;  2004, 2005, 2007.  Last year the Titans won the Alberta Summer Games Gold in the prestigious sevens tournament.  Much credit needs to go the Central Alberta High School League Coaches.  This years' team had representation from every school in the h.s. league including Rimbey, Olds, Rocky, LTCHS, HHHS and Notre Dame.

Special recognition is needed for the excellent coaching staff of Anita LaRose, Bill Bowd, Ciaran Ormond, Courtney Armstrong, and senior womens' coach, Matthew Burton.  A very strong coaching staff indeed.  Well done, Titans!
