Titans First Div. Men Stage Furious Comeback!
Opening up a 10 point lead on tries by Titans' Scottish scrumhalf Finlay Lamont at 11 minutes into the match under 30 degree plus weather may have given the Titans a false first impression.
A determined S.P. Druids rallied to take the lead 14 - 10 before Titans' Kenton Poelzer pulled off his first brilliant long swerving try run to give the locals a 17 -14 lead with Lonnie Amundson's conversion late in the first half. Two penalty kicks by the Druids gave the visitors the halftime advantage 20 - 17.
Some sloppy tackling hurt the Red Deer squad as the Druids converted a try to take a ten point lead 27 - 17 into the last five minutes of the match.
Using the bench in the extreme heat, the Titans made six changes and after 15 minutes of relentless pressure, Scottish hooker, Dylan Manson, wormed his way over. Wade Moore converted and closed the score to 27 -24 Druids leading with three minutes left.
As he did in the previous come-from-behind match with Sherwood Park last June, Kenton Poelzer burst through on a feed from Moore and Lamont running blind off the scrum to sprint 65 metres for the game winning try. Poelzer looked to be tripped up as he broke into the clear but after stumbling for what seemed like 20 m. with his nose nearly touching the turf, he regained his balance and tore down the pitch to score under the posts. Moore converted and the Titans defended for a tense 90 seconds to preserve the win and improve their record to 7 - 4, solidly in fourth place in the ten team league.
Next match - Thursday, Aug. 2 vs. Edmonton Lep/ Tigers at Titans 8:00 p.m. k.o.
Titans Senior Women Still Undefeated with Two Wins this Week
Sat. in Calgary the Titans clobbered the Hornets 53 - 17 to improve their record to 9 - 0 ( 23 -0-1 since 2006).
Chelsey Clifford had two tries and a conversion, Anita LaRose had a try, 3 conversions and a penalty goal. Single tries went to Ceara Ormond, Monica Hehli, Ursula Patterson, Kate Woods and Whitney Reid.
On Tuesday, July 24 the Ladies rudely hosted the second place Banff in a lopsided 41 - 0. However, much credit needs to be given the 6 -2 Banff squad for making the long mid-week trip to Red Deer.
Next match - Thursday, Aug. 2 vs. Irish at Titans, 8:00 p.m. k.o.
Friday, July 27 -The Titans 3rd. Div. Men finally got the game they have been waiting all season for. Twenty-five players worked as a team to lay a mean licking on the Calgary Irish 43 - 17. Rocky resident, Greg Hitchcock scored 14 points on a try, a penalty kick and three conversions. Dan Williams score two tries while single tries were scored by J.D. Boettger and Steve Milaney. Scott Blundon added two conversions. Next matches for the Thirds are in Banff this long weekend in the Banff Tens Tournament.
U 18 Women Win Southern Alberta Championship 17 -10 over Calgary Irish
Building on an early lead the Titans U 18 women took their 17 - 5 halftime score into a tough defensive second half. Bernie LaRose scored in the second minute and again at 12 minutes. The Irish recovered to score their own try at 15 min. but LaRose scored again and Monica Hehli converted to give what seemed like a comfortable 17 - 5 lead at the half. With about one minute remaining in the match the Irish scored a disputed try but the Titans' defense held to take the title.
The U 18's play in the Provincial Championships hosted at Titans Rugby Park on Wed., Aug. 1. (k.o. tba, but probably at 7 p.m.). The Titans U18 Ladies are truely representative of the Central Alberta High School League with players from all three Red Deer high schools as well as Rimbey, Rocky and Olds on the squad. All the fans are invited to cheer the girls on against the yet to be named Edmonton Champs.
