Titans Founder Dies At 67

George "Jake" Jacobs, founding member of the Red Deer Titans RFC, passed away after a lengthy illness in Didsbury hospital on July 14.  Jake was a great player and organizer for the Titans coming to Red Deer from the Calgary Hornets. Jake gave the team the name Titans and put the team on the pitch in 1972.  Players loved playing with the robust second row who combined physical play with skills and clever decision making.  When Jake carried the ball down the pitch people quickly got with him because they knew after a couple of clever dummies he would lay out a sweet pass to put someone in the clear.  The Titans were pleased to see Jake at the banquet for the New Zealand Maori on June 14, 2004 where he made a memorable presentation to the Maori kumate' - chieftain.

The Titans extend their condolences to Jake's family. The funeral is set for Thursday, July 26 at 1 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Sylvan Lake at #212, 4916- 50 Avenue. Rugby players are also encourage to attend the Titans next home match on July 28 at 3:30 vs. the Druids where the game will begin with a moment of silence in his honour.

Titans First Keep Winning

Sat., July 21 - Titans Senior Men 34 - Saracens 5; Titans Senior Women 41 - Saracens 3;  Titans 3rd Div. Men 12 - Rams 24.

The Titans First Div. Men improved their record to 6 - 4 with an impressive victory over the Calgary Saracens.  Aaron Huntley opened the scoring picking and driving a ruck ball across the line five minutes in.  Andy Peters completed a nice back play taking a pass from Jon Mauro to break clear from 20 m. Lonnie Amundson converted to give the Titans a  12 - 0 lead.  Saracens responded and looked like they were going to make a game of it when they drove a lineout in to narrow the score to 12 - 5  at 27 min.  Titans responded with their own lineout drive with Sean Tindall taking it in for his second try in two matches off the same play.  Kenton Poelzer scored at 31 min. on a typical swerving burst.  Titans ahead 22 - 5 at the half.

The heat got to the players early with several skirmishes resulting in sinbins to four players including Dylan Mason who bruised the fist of Saracens #5 with the top of his head and Everette Waddy who was totally innocent, again.  Lonnie scored a try and Kenton his second in the second half where the team worked on their possession game to grind the opponent down.  Next match is Sat., July 28 at 3:30 vs. Druids.

The Ladies won the seventh in a row and have not lost since 2005.  Bernie LaRose scored 4 tries, Alex Carlson, Nicole Leontowicz, Chelsey Clifford added single tries and Anita LaRose kick three conversions.  The Titans Ladies play second place Banff on Tues., July 24 at 8 p.m. at Titans.

Titans 3rds battled hard to tie their match at 12 with 20 minutes remaining but lost to the 'pitch and drive' tactics of a big Ram forward pack.  Matt Kidd scored on a nice burst from fullback to give the Titans the early lead.  Andrew Williams scored from 30 m. from flyhalf working his way through with some determined moves.  Thirds, 3-6, have a break until Aug. 10.

Titans Junior Women won two matches last week defeating the Calgary Irish 10 - 7 on Wed. and the Calgary Barbarians on Sat.  The U 18 girls have a 4 - 1 record.
