The
Titans started the season competing in the Spring Southern Premier Division,
which proved to be challenging. Although outnumbered in the majority of the
games, the Titans performed well given the level of opposition and the fact
that they struggled to field a full side. In the 7 league games played in the
Premier League, not a single game was forfeited. This is a credit to all the
players involved at that level and their dedication to the club and the sport
of rugby.
After
completion of the Premier League, the Titans dropped down to the Southern
Alberta 2nd Division League. With the addition of
a number of girls from the Titan’s Junior Program and several rookies new to
rugby, the Titans saw marked improvement and were much more successful. The
Titans played a total of 5 2nd Division League games, scoring 184 points on the way to a first place finish and a trip to the
playoffs.
The semifinal game played in Red Deer saw the team defeat the 4th place
White Rams and earn a place in the Southern Final.
Despite missing 7
regular starters, the Titans were able to field a team of 17 players for the
Southern Alberta Final in Calgary. The final turned out to be a story of two
halves. The first half was very lack luster and error filled and left the
Titans being totally dominated by the Rams. The Titans left the half trailing
24-5.
The second
half saw the Titans starting to play a more expansive, disciplined game and the
Titans staged a valiant comeback. After trading tries early in the second half,
the Titans trailed 29-10 but with a tighter defensive effort from both forwards
and backs the Titans started to dominate possession. With both forwards and
backs contributing tries, the Titans managed to cut the deficit that was
created in the first half. Unfortunately, at the final whistle the Titans came
up 4 points short losing the final 29-25 to the Rams.
Given the fact
that the Titans were able to field a very competitive side in the final,
despite the loss of several regular starters and the addition of several first
year rookies and junior players, the future of the team looks positive. If we
continue to promote the woman’s program in the community and transition our
junior girls into the senior women’s squad, another Provincial Title is not out
of reach.

The
Senior Women would like to take this opportunity to thank
for their amazing
support and dedication to improving
not only their team but the club as a whole. It is community-oriented
businesses like
that make
organizations like the Red Deer Titans possible. Thank you again for all your
support, we are so grateful to be associated with such an amazing company!
