The Red Deer Titans Senior Women’s rugby team had a successful home opener defeating the Calgary Rams 68-5 at the Titans Rugby Park. The Titans ladies started and finished strong putting up almost a point a minute throughout the game but undoubtedly their major success of the evening was rostering a full 25 players (plus reserves) for the game. The game saw tries from eight different players but it was clear that all 25 players made a significant impact throughout it.
Prop Isebel St. Pierre was chosen as “Forward of the Game” for her relentless and consistent performance on the field. Center Emma Newton was chosen as “Back of the Game” for her complete effort of defence, ball distribution and strong running lines (and she converted 4 kicks).
Rams choose 8-man Courtney Holtkamp after she produced seemingly endless punishing runs during the game. Unfortunately, Holtkamp cap the night off with the “W” during the traditional post game “Chugging Competition” against the Rams player of the game and her opposite number 8.
The team also attempted a world record in “Penalties during a Rugby Match” however came up just short. Prop Haley Khatib however wasn’t going to be denied setting herself a personal best of possibly eight penalties (video review still to confirm).
Overall it was a great game for the Titans Women and a great start to the season after two strong wins. They played with a lot of energy and stayed positive throughout the game….and kept their composure when necessary. The women host Lethbridge next on June 2 in what looks to be a great club day of rugby!!
Tries scored by: Sarah Stahl (3), Leah Brunner (2), Lora Lee, Courtney Holtkamp, Raven Francouer, Emma Newton, Adi Waqatabu and Gwen Fillinger
